The beach you want near Rethymno depends almost entirely on the wind. The town has kilometres of sand that is easy and often choppy; the south coast has clear water in small coves that takes an hour to reach. This compares them on access and conditions rather than on looks.

Rethymno town beach is long, sandy and walkable from the old town, but exposed to the north wind. For clear, calm water, cross to the south coast — Preveli if you can manage the stepped descent, the Kalypso coves if not. For children, Lake Kournas is the calmest water in the region.

The north coast problem: wind, not water
Rethymno’s town beach runs east from the old town for a long way, and it is genuinely convenient — you can walk from lunch to the sea in ten minutes. What it is not is sheltered. The prevailing summer wind comes from the north, and it arrives here without anything in the way.
On a calm morning it is excellent. On a windy afternoon it is choppy, the sand moves, and the umbrellas strain. This is not a defect in the beach; it is the reason people cross the island.
The south coast: clearer, calmer, further
The Libyan Sea is a different body of water. It is usually clearer, often calmer when the north is blowing, and warmer later into the autumn. The trade is that everything is an hour or so away over the mountains, and facilities are thinner.
Within the south coast, the decision is about access. Preveli is the famous one, with the palm river behind it, and it is reached only on foot down a stepped cliff path. The Kalypso coves are rock and shingle rather than sand, but you park close and walk very little.
South coast trade-offs

Swimming with small children
Lake Kournas is the answer most of the time. It is fresh water, has no waves at all, and shelves gently at the edge. The one thing to know is that cold springs feed it, so the temperature can change sharply a few metres out.
On the coast, the sheltered end of Rethymno town beach on a calm morning is the practical choice. The south coast coves are deep close in and better suited to confident swimmers.
Reading the day before you commit
Two habits make the difference. Check the wind direction rather than the temperature — it decides more about a Cretan beach day than anything else. And swim in the morning, because on the north coast the sea is usually flattest before the afternoon builds.
There are no lifeguards on most of these beaches, the south coast included. Currents around headlands are real, and the water gets deep quickly in the coves.

- You are after a specific named beach elsewhere on the island, such as Elafonissi or Balos, which are day trips from further west
