Three days is enough to see the three landscapes around Rethymno properly: the Venetian town, the south coast, and the mountain country inland. It is not enough to add Knossos as well. This itinerary is built on that honesty, and on leaving the order flexible.
The short answer
Day one in the old town, walked early and late with the middle of the day off. Day two crossing to the south coast for the gorge and a swim. Day three inland for the monastery, the cave or the villages. Decide the order the night before based on the wind.

Before you fix the order
Do not decide on the plane which day is the beach day. Crete’s north and south coasts run different weather, and the wind is the variable that decides whether a south-coast swim is glassy or unpleasant.
Know the three days in shape, then choose each evening for the morning after. The town day is the flexible one — it works in any conditions and can absorb a day the coast rules out.
Day one: the town, at both ends of the day
Start before eight. The lanes behind the harbour are close to empty, the light down them is at its best, and the stone has not begun radiating heat. Work inland from the waterfront rather than along it — the Venetian doorways and Ottoman balconies are one and two streets back.
Take the middle of the day off. Eat somewhere away from the harbour front, sleep or swim, and come back out at five. The Fortezza is the late-afternoon piece: exposed, largely open ground inside the walls, and worth it for the coastline in low light.

Day two: cross the island
This is the day that justifies basing yourself in Rethymno. Go south, through Kourtaliotiko Gorge, and swim in the Libyan Sea. Leave early — both for the heat and because the wind generally builds through the day.
The one decision is Preveli or not. Preveli has the palm river and the reputation, and a steep stepped cliff path down to the sand and back. If everyone in your party is comfortable with that, take it. If not, the Kalypso coast reaches the same water with no descent, and you see more of the gorge.
Day three: inland and shaded
The inland day is the one that works in any weather, which is why it is a good third. Two versions, depending on what you want.
Arkadi with Patsos Gorge is the history and nature version — the monastery that matters most to Cretans, then a wooded gorge with a cave church and running water. Melidoni with Margarites is the people-and-craft version — a cave with a hard history, a working pottery village, and a long lunch in the foothills.

What three days is not long enough for
Knossos. It is the longest drive from Rethymno and deserves a full day with the Heraklion museum attached. Squeezing it into three days means dropping either the south coast or the inland day, and both of those are closer, better paced and more distinctive from what you can see at home.
If the Minoan world is the reason you came to Crete, that is a fair reason to reorder everything — but do it deliberately, and give the day the early start it needs.
If you have a fourth day
Chania. It is the other Venetian harbour, larger and livelier than Rethymno, and it pairs naturally with Lake Kournas on the way back for a swim in fresh water.
A fourth day is also the point at which Knossos becomes viable without cutting anything else.
Choose this when
- You have three full days and a base in or near Rethymno
- You want variety rather than one beach repeated
- You are willing to decide the order day by day
Choose something else when
- You only have two days — drop the inland day, not the coast
- Knossos is the main reason you are on Crete — plan around it first
- You want a pure beach holiday, in which case this itinerary is more movement than you need
Questions people actually ask
Is three days enough for Rethymno?
For the town and the region immediately around it, yes. It covers the old town, the south coast and an inland day comfortably. It is not enough to add Knossos or Chania without cutting one of the three.
What order should we do these days in?
Decide each evening for the next morning, based on the wind and the forecast. The town day works in any conditions, so it absorbs whichever day the coast is not worth doing.
Can we fit Knossos into three days?
Only by dropping something. It is the longest drive from Rethymno and needs a full day with the Heraklion museum. On a three-day stay, the south coast and the inland day give you more that is distinctive.
Do we need to hire a car?
Not for day one, which is entirely walkable. Days two and three need a car or a driver — the gorges, the south coast beaches and the inland villages are not practically reachable on the bus timetable.
What if it rains?
Move the inland day forward. Melidoni Cave and the Margarites workshops are under cover and genuinely interesting, and a long lunch in the foothills is no worse in the rain.
