Plakias and the villages around it are a different kind of stay from Rethymno — smaller, quieter, and facing a sea that is usually clearer. Plenty of visitors split a trip between the two coasts, and this is the connection between them.

It is also used the other way round: staying in Plakias, arriving at either airport, and needing the crossing at the start and end of a holiday.

The drive is worth something in itself

This is not a motorway transfer. The road climbs through olive terraces and runs straight through Kourtaliotiko Gorge, which is one of the best stretches of driving in western Crete.

If you are making the crossing anyway, it is worth asking about stopping on the way — it is a private car, and the gorge viewpoint costs a few minutes.

Can we stop on the way?

Yes, within reason — it is a private vehicle. The Kourtaliotiko Gorge viewpoint is the obvious one and adds very little time. Mention it when you book so the timing allows for it.

Is there a bus instead?

There is public transport between Rethymno and the south coast, but it runs to a limited timetable and takes considerably longer than driving. With luggage, or with a group, the transfer is usually the practical choice.

Do you serve the smaller villages near Plakias?

Usually, though access varies by village and by vehicle. Tell us the exact address when you enquire and we will confirm whether we can go door-to-door.
