This is the south coast for people who want the landscape without the climb. The road drops through Kourtaliotiko Gorge, one of the most dramatic stretches of driving on Crete, and comes out on a coastline of small coves below cliffs. Less effort than Preveli, and in some ways a better swim.

Route and itinerary

Pickup in Rethymno
South out of town, climbing through olive country towards the spine of the island.
Kourtaliotiko Gorge
A limestone cleft the road runs straight through, with vertical walls, griffon vultures overhead more often than you would expect, and a chapel below the bridge where springs come out of the rock. We stop at the viewpoint; the stepped path down is optional.
The Kalypso coast
The road comes out on a stretch of coast where the cliffs drop straight into deep, clear water and small coves sit between headlands. Swimming here is off rock and shingle rather than broad sand, and the water is noticeably clearer than the north coast.
Plakias or a village stop
A late lunch or a coffee somewhere along the south coast before turning back north — decided on the day depending on time and appetite.
Return to Rethymno
Back up through the gorge, which looks like a different place in the afternoon light.
Walking and terrain
Deliberately undemanding. The gorge is seen from the road and from a viewpoint a short walk from the car, with an optional stepped path down towards the chapel and the falls for those who want it. The coast stops are reached without a significant descent.
Season
Spring is when the gorge has the most water and the wild flowers are out. Summer is for the swimming. In winter the drive is spectacular but the coves are exposed.

Why this day works from Rethymno
Preveli gets the attention, and deservedly, but the descent rules it out for a lot of people and the car park fills early. This route covers the same crossing of the island and the same coastline, and asks far less of you physically.
The gorge is the other reason. Kourtaliotiko is not a detour on the way to something else — it is one of the most striking landscapes in western Crete, and it is experienced properly from a vehicle that can stop where the view is rather than where the coach bay is.
Practical notes
The coves along this coast are rock and shingle rather than sand, and the water gets deep quickly. That makes for exceptionally clear swimming and poor wading — worth knowing if you are travelling with small children.
The south coast runs its own weather. A north wind that makes Rethymno unpleasant often leaves this side flat and calm, and the reverse happens too. Your driver will know which it is on the morning, which is part of the point of going privately.

How is this different from the Preveli day?
It covers the same crossing of the island and the same coastline, but without the stepped descent and climb that Preveli requires. You see more of Kourtaliotiko Gorge and swim from coves reached close to the vehicle rather than from a river mouth at the bottom of a cliff path.
Can we see the Kourtaliotiko waterfalls?
There is a stepped path from the bridge down towards the chapel of Agios Nikolaos and the springs below it. It is optional and not part of the required walking on this route. How much water is running depends heavily on the season — spring is the time to see it at its best.
Is the swimming good?
The water is clearer than anything on the north coast and deep close in. It is rock and shingle rather than sand, there are no lifeguards, and conditions depend on the wind. For confident swimmers it is excellent; for toddlers, Lake Kournas is the better call.
Is the road difficult?
It is winding and it climbs, and the gorge section is dramatic. It is a normal, well-surfaced Cretan road driven every day, but if anyone in your group is prone to motion sickness it is worth sitting them in the front and saying so in advance.
