The road from Rethymno to the south coast runs straight through a limestone cleft with walls several hundred metres high. Kourtaliotiko is the rare landscape you can experience properly without leaving the car, and better still if you stop.

When to go
Spring, when the springs are running hardest and the walls are green. Summer is dry but the gorge is still dramatic, and the drive is cooler than the coast.
What you are looking at
A gorge cut through limestone by the river that eventually comes out at Preveli. The walls are vertical for long stretches, and the road threads along the bottom of it — which is why it feels so much larger from a car than most gorges do.
Griffon vultures use the thermals here and are seen often enough that it is worth looking up. The name is usually explained by the sound the wind makes through the rock, which locals describe as clapping.
Stopping properly
There is a pull-in near the bridge with the best view down the gorge, and it costs nothing but a few minutes. If you are being driven, ask for it.
From there a stepped path descends towards the little chapel of Agios Nikolaos and the springs that come straight out of the rock face. It is optional, it is steps, and how rewarding it is depends entirely on how much water is running — spring is the time.

Questions people actually ask
Do you have to walk to see Kourtaliotiko Gorge?
No. The road runs through the gorge and there is a viewpoint by the bridge that requires almost no walking. The stepped path down to the chapel and springs is entirely optional.
When are the waterfalls running?
Spring is the reliable time, after the winter rain. By late summer the flow is much reduced. If the falls are the reason you are going, ask about conditions before you set off.
Can you combine the gorge with a beach?
It is on the way to both Preveli and the Plakias coast, so it is almost always combined rather than visited alone. Which beach depends on whether your group wants the Preveli descent.
