Rethymno has no airport of its own. Everyone arrives through Heraklion or Chania, or by ferry into Heraklion or Souda, and then has a drive along the north coast. This guide covers the four ways to make that drive and what genuinely affects what a private transfer costs.
The short answer
Chania is usually the shorter drive to Rethymno; Heraklion has more flights. Your options are a pre-booked private transfer, a taxi from the rank, the public bus, or a hire car. Private transfers are priced in advance and door-to-door; the bus is cheapest and leaves you at the station.

Which airport should you fly into?
Chania is generally the shorter transfer to Rethymno and the smaller, simpler airport to be met at. Heraklion carries more routes and often cheaper fares, which is why more visitors end up there.
The difference is smaller than the map implies, because both drives use the same north coast road. If the fare gap is meaningful, take it and accept a slightly longer transfer. If the fares are similar, Chania is the easier arrival.
Arriving by ferry
Overnight sailings from Piraeus dock at Heraklion and at Souda, the port serving Chania. Souda is on the convenient side for Rethymno — the drive does not need to pass through Chania.
The complication with ferries is the hour. They dock early, well before any accommodation will check you in, which leaves a gap worth planning rather than improvising on the quay with your luggage.
What actually affects the price of a transfer
We are not publishing a price list here. Transfer pricing moves with season, vehicle and route, and a figure written once and left online is how visitors end up quoting a number nobody honours.
What is stable is what drives the price, and knowing that makes a quote easy to sanity-check.
The variables in any transfer quote

- Time of day — very early and very late pickups cost more
- Season — high summer is priced differently from November

Private transfer, taxi or bus?
A private transfer is booked, priced and confirmed before you fly, with someone waiting in arrivals and your luggage loaded once. That certainty is what you are paying for, and it matters most with children, late flights or a lot of bags.
A taxi is available on arrival at both airports, priced at the rank, and perfectly reasonable for one or two people arriving in daylight. The public bus is the cheapest by a wide margin and runs to the Rethymno bus station rather than your accommodation, which is fine with a rucksack and awkward with four suitcases.
Do you need a hire car as well?
If you plan to be out every day, a hire car is usually the cheaper answer and worth it. If you want two or three day trips across a week and no car sitting unused in a hotel car park, transfers plus a driver on the days you travel often works out better — and removes the parking problem at Chania and Preveli, which is the part that spoils self-driving in high season.

Are child seats available?
Availability, notice and cost are confirmed per booking rather than stated here as a general rule. Tell us the ages of the children when you enquire so the right seats are in the vehicle.
Is a private transfer better than a taxi?
It is more predictable. The price is agreed before you fly, someone is waiting when you land, and the vehicle is sized for your group and luggage. A taxi is fine for one or two people arriving in daylight with little to carry.
