Preveli Beach: access, stairs, swimming and timing

Preveli is the beach at the mouth of the Kourtaliotiko river, where a palm grove runs inland along fresh water and the Libyan Sea comes in over coarse sand. It is the best-known beach in the region and the one most often visited badly, because almost nobody reads about the descent first.

When to go

Late spring to early autumn for swimming. Early in the day or late afternoon for the descent — the climb back in full midday sun is what people remember, and not fondly.

The descent is the whole question

There is no road to Preveli. From the upper car park a stepped path goes down the side of the gorge to the sand, and the same path is your way back. It is not a long walk in distance terms, but it is steep, the steps are uneven, and there is no shade on it.

Going down is easy and people underestimate the return accordingly. In July and August, climbing that path at two in the afternoon is genuinely hard work. Either come early, come late, or choose a different beach.

What makes it worth the walk

The palm grove. A river runs out of the gorge behind the beach, and a stand of Cretan date palms follows it inland — fresh water, shallow enough to wade up, with shade that the beach itself does not have.

The grove burned badly in 2010 and has regrown. It is a protected landscape rather than a resort, which is why there are no permanent facilities, and why what you carry in you carry back out.

If the descent is not for you

This is a real constraint and worth taking seriously. If anyone in your party cannot manage a steep stepped climb in heat, Preveli will not be a good day.

The alternatives are genuinely good: the Kalypso coast reaches similar water without the descent, and the Kourtaliotiko Gorge upstream is arguably the more dramatic landscape of the two.

How long is the walk down to Preveli Beach?

Short in distance, demanding in gradient. It is a stepped cliff path rather than a stroll, fully exposed, and the climb back up is the harder direction. Most reasonably fit visitors manage it without difficulty at a sensible hour; in midday August heat it defeats plenty of people.

Can you get to Preveli by boat?

Seasonal boat services have run from Plakias and Agia Galini in the past, which avoids the descent entirely. Whether they are operating in a given season needs checking at the time — we confirm it rather than assume it.

Is there anywhere to eat at Preveli?

Facilities are minimal and seasonal. Treat it as a beach you bring water and food to, not one you buy lunch at.

Can you swim in the river?

You can wade up it, and in the warmer months plenty of people do — it is fresh, cold and shallow. It is a protected environment, so stay on the water and off the vegetation.
