Preveli is not difficult to reach, but every route has a catch, and the last part of the journey is on foot down a cliff path whichever way you arrive. Knowing that before you set off is most of what this guide is for.
The short answer
Drive or take a private transfer to the upper car park, then descend a steep stepped path to the beach. Buses run a limited seasonal service and leave you with the same descent. Seasonal boats from Plakias and Agia Galini are the only way that avoids the stairs entirely — when they are running.

The part nobody mentions until you are there
There is no road to Preveli Beach. Every route by land ends at a car park above the gorge, and from there you go down a stepped path cut into the cliff to reach the sand — then back up the same way when you leave.
It is not long, but it is steep, uneven and fully exposed. The climb out in the middle of a summer afternoon is what defeats people, and it is entirely predictable. Go early, go late, or take the boat.
Driving yourself
The most flexible option if you are comfortable on mountain roads. The route crosses the island and runs through Kourtaliotiko Gorge, which is worth the drive in its own right.
Two things to plan for. The car park above the beach is finite and fills early in high season, so a mid-morning arrival in August can mean a long wait or a long walk. And the road is winding, which matters if anyone in the car is prone to motion sickness.
Taking the bus
There is a seasonal public bus service towards the south coast, but it runs on a limited timetable built around residents rather than day trippers. In practice it usually means a long day with a fixed return time, and it leaves you at the top of the same descent.
It is the cheapest option and it works if your plans are flexible. It is a poor choice if you want to be at the beach at a specific hour.
The boat, when it is running
Small boats have run seasonally from Plakias and Agia Galini to Preveli, landing on the beach itself. This is the only way to reach the sand without the stepped path, which makes it the answer for anyone who cannot manage the descent.
The caveats are real: it is seasonal, it is weather-dependent, and services change from year to year. We check whether it is operating for your dates rather than assuming from last season.
A private driver
What this buys you is timing. You go down at the hour that suits swimming rather than the hour the bus runs or the car park allows, and you are collected when you are ready rather than when the timetable says.
It also removes the parking problem entirely, and makes it straightforward to pair Preveli with Spili or the Kourtaliotiko viewpoint on the same day without rushing either.

- Shoes with grip, not flip-flops
- Water for the climb back as well as the beach
- Your own shade — there is little on the sand
- An early or late arrival, especially in July and August
